Shellac French PolishesShellac was known to ancient civilisations and references to it are to be found in Sanskrit writings of over two thousand years ago. Probably the first use of shellac resin itself was in the lacquering of wood by a dry process; not until the end of the sixteenth century does any reference to shellac varnish appear. Today shellac is one of the most important of all resins. Origin of ShellacShellac is a resinous excretion of an insect, Laccifer Lacca, commonly known as the Lac insect. It is bred almost exclusively in India and French Indo-China. It is a small insect, rarely longer than an eighth of an inch, and spends its entire existence attached to the twigs and branches of certain trees. It feeds on the sap of these trees. It uses this sap to produce a resin with which it entirely covers itself as a protective coating. In time the whole branch becomes encrusted with this resin, which is harvested and processed into shellac. Shellac Product Range3001/000 AC Garnet Polish.Garnet shellac is a dark brown colour, more suited to darker timbers. It is used on traditional Georgian – style mahogany antique furniture. ‘AC’ is a purity rating which denotes 10% rosin content. 3004/000 Black Polish.Traditionally called Gas Black due to soot from gas lamps being used in its manufacture.
